How bad?
A condition on my buying my truck 3yrs ago was that the fronts were done (and they were) rears haven't been done to my knowledge- I've put 38-40K on the truck in 3 years...
So, this summer, I think brakes are due. I haven't done brakes in years (like since late '89-'90). How bad is it on these trucks? Any gotchas, concerns, things to plan for, etc.
I've read on TDR that it's a good time to the chevy cyl upgrade, and that maybe slotted rotors on the front.. Other ideas? Also, if anyone wants to tag team this with me, dinner, beers, whatever are on me.
If ya guys in derby want to help, I'll host a big azz cookout. all the miniburgers you can eat LOL :falldownlaugh: :woohoo: :HoleShotHolset:

Fronts or rears?
Up front your going to have to pop your hubs out to get to the rotors. Otherwise its pretty straightforward.
Out back it's pretty much your standard drum brake setup. Leave one side together so you can look at it when you put the other back together, and you'll be fine. :HoleShotHolset:

thx, Dave, that's what I've read too. I think I might be doing all 4, the fronts stick since the seller of the truck did a crappy job. I like going fast, but being able to stop is ultimately more important. :D

rear drum brakes are a cake walk on these truck art. like dave said, leave one side together to look at for reference.....and yes i would do the chev wheel cyl upgrade while your in there.... no sense letting your wheel cyls go bad and ruining your new brake shoes....
as far as slotted rotors go, are your rotors the slip on style or are they attached through the back @ the hub??? if its not slip on then i wouldnt replace the fronts until they are worn out completly just b/c of the amount of extra time it can take to get the hubs off of the truck
im willing to give ya a hand with the job if your still skittish about the whole thing.

Thanks Tom! (j/k :falldownlaugh:) I may take you up on the offer, Dave but it'll be warmer out before I do this work.. (e.g. like june) Truck still stops fine but when it rains the calipers stick, and you remember the assholery i put on at the dyno day LOL :falldownlaugh:

that was funnnnnnnnnnnnay seeing you dyno with your ebrake slightly kicked LMAO....... and please describe what is happening when the fronts are sticking???? are they sticking after you release the pedal or does one grab harder than the other causing a pull to one side when braking??? it might be a caliper that needs to be replaced if they are not releasing pressure when you let off the pedal. if your getting a pull when braking its more likely to be a problem with the caliper pin not being lubed properly.

hardy har har har. ;-) I'd luv your help if you can spare it. I'd want your take on some other stuff too, like finish and managing rust - your truck as others in CT are so clean.
