So, I’m coming home from NH, towing the 9,000 lb towhauler; wife, grand-daughter and 2 dogs in the truck. Coming home early from camping due to really crappy weather and personal issue to deal with here at home. Just finished running thru the White Mountains, lots of nice hills, truck is running great. The new double deep tranny pan is working well, temps are very nice. The new MMM chip seems to be working too, keeping the EGT’s low. Get onto I91 south almost to the MA boarder, doing about 62 mph and I hear BAM! :omg: Did I run over something? Am I going to lose a tire? So, I start to slow down, everything seems OK, so I press the go peddle but, hmmmm I got no power… But I do have some serious issue with EGT’s now! Crap, 1200… 1250.. OH man! Take it out of over-drive and limp to the top of the hill. Slowly make my way to the next rest area and pull over. Look under the hood, everything looks ok, turbo still spinning, all the boots look ok. Turn the motor off and feel the boots for rips, can’t feel anything. Oh well, back on the highway, keep the OD off, speed at about 52mph and watch the EGTs all the way home. Hit some hill in CT where the best I could do was 25mph. But I made it home.

Well, that’s my story. What should I start looking for??

Oh, hey :Signal73: Ummmm, what did you set that boost elbow at???

thats 100% an air problem..... egts means youve got fuel.... check all your clamps, make sure you didnt blow one of the nuts off the boot clamps... ive seen that a few times. might be the intercooler.... check all the edges/seams for a split.

blew a hole in the intercooler? or a cut in a boot that you can't see until under pressure? so long as the turbo is ok it sounds like a boot/intercooler problem.

yeah..like dave said, check the nuts on the boot clamps cause they can strip the threads right off the clamp, but have the nut still on there "looking normal"

As stated it sounds like a boost leak, most likely a boot slipped out from under the clamp

Oh, hey Ummmm, :Signal73: what did you set that boost elbow at???

Good question Dave, whats your boost gage say?:stirthepot:

I got stock boots and clamps if your in a pinch

Thanks all for confirming! Ya, I kind figured it was a boost leak.
It sure was interesting how fast that EGT gauge moved up and down every time I pressed the peddle
Just having some fun with ya Jim :falldownlaugh: Thanks for the offer. I have often wondered what kind of boost it's making, but figured I'd be better off with the tranny temp gauge since I got the truck for towing. Guess I'll have to figure a place to mount a boost gauge now :exactly:

Dave, if you have a late 99 build, the 00 and 01 had an issue with the drivers side IC boot, it was right up against a piece of sheet metal, and over time will slowly cut into the boot.

:woohoo:
All fixed!
You know, at the rest area on the way home I figured it HAD to be one of the bottom boots. I was crawling around under the truck, feeling for rips or if the boot had popped off. But I couldn't feel anything wrong.
So, I was just out in the garage, figured I'd start from the turbo and work my way around. Hmmmm, that very first clamp, the one that's the EASIEST too see and work on looks like it's not on the boot anymore. :nutkick: Damn, I could have fixed that on the road, but I figured no way is it going to be the easy one... I loosened the clamp, slipped the boot back on and tighten it up. Checked the rest and gave them a 1/4 turn each (well, the ones I could get to. I know before I go to Sturgis this summer, I'll be checking all the boot and all the clamps. :exactly:

good to see your back up and running right. i understand the whole roadside repair thing though..... woulda been great to figure it out on the side of the road, but typically the o.... feeling takes over and you stop thinking properly. yeah checking your clamps real quick before a trip isnt a bad idea.... or at the very best, carry a 1/4drive ratchet and matching socket incase something happens while driving.

Hey now... I'm just waiting for you to buy another parts truck with one in it :exactly:

i actually just got a call from a friend, one of his friends just crashed his 94 cummins he called me asking me if i wanted the tranny, that only has 1000 miles on pretty much brand new, but i told him its a 47rh and i needed a 47re. i'll ask him if he had gauges in it, i know it has a mint 8ft bed. and its got 3.54's for gears, but the front axle is gone tho.

what do you need for parts?

go to www.dieselmanor.com and order up! As far as the boot coming off, clean it up good with brake cleaner before ya put it back on. Hairspray is rumored to hold them good too.

Ya, I figured I'd take all the boots off, clean everything up, inspect em and reinstall (with the clamps facing a direction I can get a wrench on!). Playing with this boot on the side of the hiway is getting old fast!

So... On my stock system, what should my boost be/what should I set the boost elbow too? Can I set it without towing, in other words, will the gate open at 30 lbs of boost the same loaded or unloaded?

Jim

you may see slightly more loaded then unloaded if you set it to 30 empty you shouldnt see over 35 towing.

Dave, maybe consider getting a heavier set of boots and clamps. They're less prone to blow off (I have done it, though).
