Ok, dads truck will be due here in a month. He is 5 inch straight piped now, Thanks DOUG, and has miled tunes. I can very easily undo the tuning but i was wondering if anyone here in mass has ever had to have emiisions testing on a smokey 12 valve? I was reading the ct thread but i know up here most places are absolute dickheads.:nutkick:

If the door sticker lists gvw under 10000 lbs you are subject to a safety test only - do not let anyone tell you otherwise! It's up to whoever is doing the safety test to call you on lack of a cat/muffler ect. The place I bring my truck to cares more about the $29 fee than what my exh system does not have or how much smoke/noise it puts out.

Hey John! It's been a while since I've been on the site. How you doin?
I go to a place in Weymouth on Colombian/Park St. It's a Sunoco station. I still have the cat on, but I've never seen him look under the truck, so I don't know if he actually knows that it's supposed to have one. If he did look, he'd notice the lack of a muffler.
Anyway, I saw you the other day at the light at Southern Artery and Sea St. Your truck is looking good, at least the side I saw when I realized it was you. The Ohio plates gave you away...

I think I've seen him around town, I saw a giant sticker pile on wheels. I couldn't see the exhaust through all the stickers, but it could have been him. Next time I see that truck, I'll blow a little smoke to get his attention.

I go to a little garage here in Raynham. As soon as I pull into his garage, first words out of his mouth are, please turn it off. One time I asked him if I'd be rejected if I removed the cat. He said I will only look under your truck if I think you have a exhaust leak, and yes my truck is loud.

Do you happen to know if he can do trucks over 10,000lb GVWR?? Guessing no :nutkick: I am not too worried as the cat and muffler are still on my truck but right after the sticker is on off they go.

I am due for an inspection (actually was december) and I am at 11.5GVWR currently should be un-modded since my 5" still has the cat and muffler on it but I would like to give the money to a mod friendly place and continue in the future.
OH, actually while on this subject the guy at the local shop told me the other day that a new law in Mass for trucks over 10k or registered commercially need to have backup alarms to pass inspection. Has anyone heard this or know if it is true or not?

I got no clue really. I just heard from the guy at the shop who I buy my parts and stuff from. Told me its some new thing for 09. I got the same line last time the truck was inspected, "Oh you got commercial plates now, you should have an extinguisher, wheel chocks and emergency triangles." I see the guys point and all and will probably get them eventually but oh well.
My guy also told me that if I need them they make some little cheapo backup alarms that go between the reverse light and the plug, least its enough to get past the inspection if ya need them. Gonna see if I can ask an inspector about it before I spend $29 and get failed for something stupid.

Is your truck over 10k GVWR? Might be able to get around it for registering it for under 10k but I think when they open your door and see the door sticker they will turn you away. That is what happened to me. Went to the place I normally get a sticker at the guy popped the door and looked at the sticker and told me I had to go someplace else. Ended up going to a place up the road and instead of having the normal inspection sticker sign (ya know, the one with the picture of the sticker and the month number) it had one that also said Heavy Duty Inspections right over the picture of the sticker. I can't remember how much it was now but I think it was about the same price.
I guess the rule is in mass anything over 10k or anything with more than 4 wheels requires commercial tags.

naw I didn't buy any of it. The guy recommended it to me, probably looking at me as a young kid and he was an older guy in his late 50's or early 60's or so. If you got a sticker at a regular place before then I am sure you will be fine this year. Even if you have commercial plates on the truck I think as long as you aren't over 10k on the door sticker you are good to go to any normal place to get the sticker.

Yea, I always wondered why there is a 10k GVWR option when you spec the trucks out, and I guess this is why, so you can have a "light duty" one and skate under the laws.
Oh well at the rate I am going probably won't be getting a sticker for another month or two lol, it was due in December, but I guess I'll be getting around to it

Sorry for the rant:
I have a 2000 3500 that I converted to SWR. I had been running a commercial plate because of the duallies but when I took them off the registry let me switch to passenger plates because their computer had my truck as 10000 gvw. I even told them my door sticker says 10500 but the lady in charge said that was OK. That was 2 weeks ago.
So I went to have my truck inspected at the same place I've been going to for years but he told me because of the new law effective October of last year he couldn't inspected it. In the past, it was no problem he could use the 10000 gvw number, but with this new system he gets an error message that tells him 10000 is wrong and instructs him to check the door sticker. He told me I need to go to someone who does class B inspections (10001 gvw to 26000gvw).
So I called the RMV "Help line" and they gave me 3 garages in town that are class B. Two of them told me they couldn't do it and the 3rd said I have to have a DOT inspection because of the 10500 gvw. They also told me it must have commercial plates or they couldn't inspect it. So I had to switch back to Commercial plates. Also, I had to buy a warning triangle, chock blocks and fire extinguisher to pass inspection. The inspection costs $123.00 and takes 1 1/2 hrs (ya right). They don't take appointments so you have to drop of the truck first thing in the morning and hope they get to it.
I had a chance to talk to the inspector. The new inspection follows exactly FMCSA "DOT" inspection. Here's a link to what they check http://www.mass.gov/rmv/inspect/commercial_regs.pdf.
I also asked him about emission testing so he told me in April they start doing opacity tests with an opacity machine (smoke test) on vehicles over 10000 gvw. He told me to check this page http://www.vehicletest.state.ma.us
/about_howchange.html (http://www.vehicletest.state.ma.us/about_howchange.html)
Also, any trailer used for commerce (including contractors and landscapers) with a gvrw over 3000 pounds will also have to be inspected. No wonder so many small businesses are leaving Mass.
The only good thing is vehicles that previously required a MA inspection and a federal "DOT" inspection now only need the MA inspection (doesn't help me). I was told MA received some federal money for supporting this new system but I couldn't find anything in writing to confirm this.

Dang that sucks completely. I purchased my truck in October of 07 so probably right around the time it started happening. Gotta be something with how the computers work, stupid computers always messing things up.
I've been wanting to get a extinguisher just in case but triangles and chocks is going too much. I think the place I went to had some kit that contained all the stuff for like $30 or something (probably a cheapo get your truck passed kit.) Next they are gonna require people to have a Class B license to drive a pickup over 10k GVWR :nutkick: I could see if the vehicle had commercial DOT numbers to work and all but otherwise just let me be classified as passenger vehicles with the rest of em.
See about loosing your title for the trailer lol. Probably a bad idea, but I know my dads 22' utility trailer is registered for only 3k or something since he doesn't have a title for it and it is considered a home made trailer and can only be registered for up to 3k. We have never been stopped with it so I dunno how far they would go to ticket ya for it being over registered weight even if the axles/brakes and everything are easily able to handle about 10k.
From everything my dad has been telling me Maine is the place to register stuff, least around here. His 10k dump trailer was only about $30 or something to register, and no issues registering his truck.
Oh, and Welcome to the forum and thanks for the links.

also heard all trailers now have to be inspected which is false as I re-registered my 5k lb trailer today and was good right out of the registry. must be heavier ones.

Yea as far as I know it is. I was joking when I mentioned the class B, just seems the way this state is going I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to pull something stupid like that. Just toughening inspection regs for the "commercial" vehicles (anything over 10k GVWR, or having more than 5 wheels on the ground.)

Yea for some reason I can't remember it but I believe it was only $29 when I had mine done. The commercial rated stations will have the normal oversized-sticker sign posted but it will say Heavy Duty above it.
Seems half the stuff that ya hear is partly true and partly not. I still have yet to get down there and just talk to the guy about what I need, guess its either ask him beforehand or fork over $29 to hear what I am gonna need :nutkick:

OK I was at Salami's truck center (BOSTON) today and talked with the sticker technician. hE TOLD ME ANY VEHICLE OVER 10,000 gvw needs to have a state and DOT inspection... If Ur vehicle is registered non-commercial U need to follow the commercial guide lines...(IE Reflective triangles, chock blocks, fire extinguisher, and the driver needs a DOT medical card.... No wsome shops will look the other way on some of the stuff..... Now for the trailers.... any trailer registered over 3,000 GVW will have to have a DOT inspection sticker (the DOT police will not be enforcing this until OCT.) any trailer registered over 10,000 GVW will have a DOT and State inspection.
For the cost of this, trucks over 10,000 $120 Trailers over 3,000 GVW $85 Trailers over 10,000 GVW $120... That is what Salami's Truck Center is charging ... I don't know what others are charging for these inosections...

Now that I'm up in NH and dont have to deal with MA emissions laws I can relax a bit.
However I do know a bit about the whole comercial inspection deal.
Basically the only group that the law changes effect are business owners who are already required to have commercial plates and now have to go through the damn comercial inspection. Nothing is changing as far as the actual classification of a COMERCIAL vehicle.
Personally I hold a CDL though I no longer drive for a living and think they should change some things. ex: A 30,000 motor home with air brakes does not requrie comercial inspection or a comercial liscense. That's a bigass dangerous vehicle usually drivin by some shmo...
"Commercial Motor Vehicle shall mean any motor vehicle which is not a private passenger motor vehicle, antique motor car, motorcycle, auto home, house trailer, taxicab, ambulance, hearse, livery
vehicle, or school pupil transport vehicle."
So basically if you didn't have to have comercial plates before, no worries. If it is a business vehicle your SOL on the comercial inspection.

My truck is a dually so I have to have commercial plates although its just registered in my name. I brought it to the dealer and he said just throw some chalk blocks on the floor and I would be all set. He did say if I got pulled over I was suppose to have extinguisher, triangles etc. I would think if they were going to pull a smaller truck over they would be looking for work trucks with names but we will find out! I love Massachusetts....
On another note I brought my duramax to an inspection station and it passed with no problems. The guy was telling me how they plug the truck in now and check all the trucks functions. Needless to say my duramax has twin turbos, efi live and lets just say missing a few restrictive devices and all systems tested normal.

yea that sucks...doesnt make sense to me...your dually and mine ar the same truck sans 2 more wheels. ahh Mass....
yea...basically as long as you dont have a check engine light youll be ok unless they do visual and know what they are looking at. only thing factory on my Cobra is the motor which is heavily modded, no emissions crap, no mufflers and the tuner turns all the codes off. passed just fine.
