Hey guys...I was on my way home tonight, and while going down the highway, I heard a big thump under the hood and lost my power steering and brakes. Yay! :wtf2: I pulled over and untangled the belt from all of the pulleys and found that I have one pulley that won't spin. I think it's the vacume pump, but I'm not positive. I ended up having it towed to the nearest Chevy stealer and hope to have it fixed before the end of the week.:nutkick: Does anyone know what this will probably cost me?:dunno:

Yah...that's more less what I was thinking... I had it towed to Bank's. They were the closest. I would of liked to have it sent to Benson's, but I'm running out of money!:woohoo: :nutkick:

The brakes and power steering work off the powersteering pump. Most modern trucks have hydroboost brakes. I've never done a PS pump on a Duramax but if it's like most other chevy pumps it shouldnt be tooo bad.

yea ive heard alot of good things about benson,s not so good about banks. the cost of towing these days is crazy

I agree with 95cummins about the ps but i have never worked on a dmax

The power steering pump spins fine, but there's a smooth pulley located between the belt tensioner and fan, which I was told (by a friend of mine who is a mechanic at Benson's) is a vaccume pump. I believe it's used to run the wastegate and help with the brakes? I dunno...:dunno: I just want my baby back in the driveway.:nopityA:

oh yea, that probably just blew the belt off and stopped running all of that stuff. The vacuum pump shouldn't run the brakes, but your right it probably does work the wastegate, along with possibly the heater controls.

Got my truck back from the stealer today. $122 in parts and $180 in labor:nutkick: Turns out it was not the pump. I couldn't really see that well in there after it happened. (it was getting dark) They had to replace two idler pulleys. One had part of the bearing cage broken, and half of the bearings missing, and the other felt like it had gravel in it. I guess I don't have to worry about replacing it now, and I also got almost 170K out of a factory serpentine belt. I do have to admit though, they were really good about getting everything done asap, and kept me updated throughout the day. (Maybe it's just because it was Monday morning and no one was in a pissy mood yet?):smokin:

Good to hear! I think you got your truck back so fast because the dealer's are so hard up for work right now. Their labor rates are outrageous.

That sucks, I changed my idlers years ago cause they had the gravel sound. Do you really have 170k on your truck?

Yup...They let loose at 170,009 miles. I guess that's all there rated for!:Signal73:
