hi, im starting a project putting a cummins into an 85 gmc. i bought a 2500 cummins but its an auto and i wanted to run a standard transmission. i have been looking into buying either a nv4500 or a nv5600, from what i understand the nv5600 is a better tranny and the nv4500 had a few issues but i can get a rebuilt 4500 for about a grand and the 5600 is about 3 grand. is it worth it to spend the extra 2 grand for the 5600. i appreciate any advice.
I personally would go with the 4500, the 5600 is much harder to find parts for and as you already found out, much more expensive. Update the 4500 main shaft to the fully splined version to take care of the 5th gear nut issue, and if big hp is your goal upgrade the input shaft from 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 and slap a double disk clutch in there and you have a very stout trans. Proper fluid is also key, Castrol Syntorque or the amsoil equivalent. Welcome to the site, Keep us updated on the project it sounds very interesting. Where abouts are you from?
