Well my stock exhaust is starting to rot out a bit and it is time to replace it and I have been wanting stacks for some time but dont want any aggravation if I am going to be hassled about them. There is an older chevy in my area with them and has had them as long as I have lived in this area (12 years or so)
I am not worried about the inspection part of it but rather if I am going to be hassled by the police. It would also be nice to not blow smoke all over my boat and camper when I tow them :)

WELL with that said, where would you recommend getting an exhaust setup (stacks or regular) I only want to do cat back and I was thinking 5 inch. I already have the muffler cut out . I also do not know how to weld so if it involved that I could not do it.

Thanks
Ray

Not sure about legality, But stacks will make your boat/camper get covered worse!

Really? I figured it would go over instead of blowing a cloud and pulling through it. I am not blowing a lot of smoke but a small to med one here and there.

Stacks will make it worse cause the exhaust blows down towards the tailgate as you drive.

That being said...the only time I was given grief from a PO was when I ran my stacks straight piped. Too damn loud.

They're not illegal - yet... My neighbor put 5" stacks on is 78 F250 and they look great. I'd go for the polished 304 stainless so nothing rusts.

Stacks are not illegal in mass, but I pull a camper and it used to get sooted all the time, even without putting your foot in it, 5" are the way to go.you don't have to weld anything its a bolt together system, What truck are you putting them on, Theres a set of 5"stacks and all the fittings in the for sale section right now.

It is going on an 03 Ram reg cab. I was looking at the black cloud diesel 5" kits because they are in my budget, I did reply asking if some stacks were still for sale in that forum
Thanks

I think part of it depends on WHERE in Mass you are.....

At least out here, between Worcester and Springfield, its not a problem unless you bring all sorts of attention to yourself.

Besides, you could always argue that a Turbo is an apporved silenceing device( read that somehwere, cant remember where, though, in this state....)....

I run a straight pipe dumped right in front of the wheel, and I dont have any problems... I am just aware of my surroundings...

I am in Peabody, north of Boston.

I dont do anything overly stupid, well maybe once and a while ;) The only time I have ever been pulled over for my truck was in my old truck and the tires were sticking out way to far and the cop told me to get fender flairs or he would give me a ticket

When I was coming home from Carlisle last year, a 2nd gen Ram pulled onto 84 just ahead of me, with a bunch of bikes behind him. He stepped on it and the guys on the bikes were ducking to get away from the smoke. :smilielol:

I wish I had my video camera with me.

I got pulled over for coming out of a carwash sideways one time and the cop told me i should retrace my steps because i lost one of my stacks somewhere along the way...Thats the only crap i have ever gotten from a cop about my stacks.

On another note i was getting off 93 to 110 a while back and had a big group of bikes behind me. i pulled to the side and flagged them to go by but they wouldnt so i got on it and smoked out the road. The next light every guy in the group was laughing and giving me the thumbs up while every wifey on the back flipped out calling me a dick.

the stock cummins engine, or even plus some hp doesn't warrant more than a 4" exhaust. I was told this from a MBRP tech who didn't want to upsell me to a 5"... And, he's probably right. Now, there are exceptions, but 4" are prolly alright for most.. :HoleShotHolset:

These are pretty much the same things I have heard. I believe it was actually coming from banks or someone back quite a few years ago but the consensus was that 5" yielded ZERO performance gain over 4" unless the truck was pushing over 500rwhp and even over that I think the gain was very minimal.

Stacks are more like looooong tips though, and 6" to me is the smallest to go IMHO 7's look pretty sweet though, just big enough to catch you eye but not too big.

Hey i know i am late in this discussion but i had stacks for 2 years in quincy, Ma. I ran them on my 96 which is very smokey... the towing in short distances is ok, but when i tow the atv, Rhino or even boat for more than 40 miles it makes for a dirty trailer. I towed a 18 foot enclosed white trailer one time and it needed to be washed badly after a 15 minute ride out here and that was empty.

As far as legality in mass they are legal. they just took my truck in as dual exhaust and 5 inch pipe. They never did say anythign about smoke either...

Thanks for all the input guys! Looks like I am going to go with the 5" from here http://www.blackclouddiesel.com/Stacks/stacks.htm?gclid=CLLhlInTm5kCFQxKGgodc25IDQ

As much as I would LOVE to go with 6 or 7 inch it is just out of my budget :( I have to keep it around $600. I figure the tips will only last a year or 2 before they start to rust out like every other chrome exhaust tip so I figure at that point I will add some SS ones and maybe go with 6 or 7 inch at that time

I doupt you will have the rust problem like you think. Iv had my stacks for almost 2 years and they still looks good with no rust. They dont see the abuse like tips under the bed of your truck. (Rocks salt road grim ect...)

Well that is good to hear! Any issue with water getting in them during heavy rain?

I also found a 6 inch kit from the place wirenut recommended that is within my budget :woohoo:

I dont know about other styles... but, miters and stove-pipes, yeah, water gets in them....

And when you start the truck, it blows that black acidic water everywhere...

Just, make sure the wife's WHITE caddy isnt next to it:97DodgeCTD:

You will never hear the end of it.... oh... wait, that was me.... and I still havent heard the end of it....

I ended up using a coffee can, with the lid cut out smaller than the stack, so I could just pop it on, an it would be nice and snug....

I dont know about 2 stacks, but with a single, and just starting, you can launch that coffee can about 15 feet......
