Anyhow back to this,

Is it worth the $$$'s to get all the bells, whistles, and tinkernuts as technology changes or go with WHAT important features?

The best features over the last few years have been the companies including CTCSS/DCS without the need for an additional card. VERY few places run Digital or encoded, trunking is up and coming for larger Dept's. Hartford and Waterbury are trunked, and CSP runs Digital (apco25) encryption, along with Milford PD.

Best thing is to buy a frequency guide for your area and see what they are using for radio systems. This way you wont spend an extra couple hundred on something you may not need. http://www.scannerworld.com/ usually has fair prices and quick service.:)
