my exhaust stinks.. got another complaint about it yesterday. had a guy on a motorcycle two weeks ago wiping the air in front of his face like it stunk. a couple of you guys got a whiff at the first hooters meeting this winter. got any ideas as to what's causing it? injectors?

:smilielol: alright guys.

no, it's almost a burning smell which i'd think is fuel related. there's a difference between diesel exhaust smell and then strong diesel exhaust smell that you don't want to stand near. does the brand of oil make a difference (in soot retention/smell)? injectors going bad? amsoil air filter helping to dust the engine? 123k on it

am i just being paranoid? :exactly:

i have 1 injector that will misfire now and then.. it did it 2 nights ago for about a minute. then it clears up. it's either #3 or #4 injector. could it be a small headgasket leak? i dunno. but it's very very random and rarely happens.

dunno about the turbo

i've read different oils make the exhaust smell different

Tom-- what do you care about what some biker thinks?

Hows the intake pipe look? You will be able to tell if the airfilter is letting stuff by.

You running a tuner or stock?

Get that injector out of there or you'll be putting a sleeve in the motor! Your a smart guy you don't have to be told that twice. :exactly: What do you have done to the truck now, anyways, Tom?

i don't know how to figure out which injector it is.. i guess i can pull the two a visually check them. it's done it since i bought the truck. i assume a solenoid in the injector or something electrical. like i said it'll do that maybe once every 2 months. mods - smarty TNT #1, he351ve turbo, willy's intake, straight pipe, pusher pump.. that's it. egts are cold.

scan tool should be able to show a problem

If you can find someone that will help you with a scan tool, you can isolate the problem injector. If you were a little closer, I'd help you out. I helped Dennis do it with his. My Snap On Solus will shut down individual injectors, not sure what others will do that.

it did it once during the winter. while it was missing i pulled the injector harnesses and the 3-4 didn't change the engine noise as much as the other two did.

in the first second of the video where you hear the flutter... that's what my truck sounds like when an injector starts missing. it'll clear up and act normal sometimes within a minute... sometimes i can drive down the road a couple miles, come to a stop, and it's still stumbling. then it'll just go away and idle smooth.

:dunno:

I like to cover the bikers in a black cloud so they know just where the smell is coming from. LOL Kidding unless they do something stupid I keep the fog machine in check. Hope you get it figured out Tom

haha, my truck hardly smokes though. i run torque management on #1 to keep the transmission alive. it's not the black smoke that smells bad, just the exhaust in general. ii'm still not gaining oil. i checked the resistance on the injector solenoids and they weren't different from each other.

i have noticed in the last week that i'm hearing a random tick at idle which could be cp3 timing, injector, or valve seat dropping (but that would be constant wouldn't it)

What kind of oil are you running in it? I run the rotella and usually once it gets soot saturated my exhaust will start smelling bad.

rotella. i have noticed it smells worse once sooted up, but i only have 1000 miles on this oil change
