I wanna try too, but with narrow highway tires I'd probably just dig some nice holes in the pulling track... :smilielol:

i think for the dead sled pulls there is only 3 gas classes and 1 diesel class all based on weight and possibly tire size.... its cheap admission/competition..... just remeber this is dead sled pulling, not transfer sled.

What's the difference? e.g. is this like pulling a block of cement or something?

Also, if anyone can loan me some wheels I'll put my truck in. :smilielol: DAve, want to join team puss-n-boots? :falldownlaugh:

HA! :falldownlaugh: Yep, true.
Tried to get more nuts on way hoome from work today. 2 junk yards didn't have anything for me. Looks like the dealer is gonna get my coin at this point.

Of course I could try the creative parts swap like I did when I was a kid... No, never mind... :nutkick:

Flip, lets drop your axle and put it on my truck, then i'll do the sled pull. By then I'll get more power, maybe we can take a prize. Doug pls don't run.. :smilielol:

can you fit 35s???? i just might have my hands on a set of 35x16x16.5 :Paully6: boggers that i could loan out to ya. they wont be streetable, as im planning on customizing the treads, but we could easily swap em at the pulls. the wheels im getting for them are deep dish, so hopefully turning wont be an issue with the wide tires....

as far as the dead sled goes, you pull a large wood sled with weighted cement blocks on it, you must pull it 10 ft to be called a full pull. as you get farther along in the comp they increase the weight on the sled.

bring a receiver hitch with the ball MIA and i will loan ya a BIG d ring to put in the hitch instead, so that you hook up easily.

the only thing my truck is gonna be pulling is a trailer with my 79 F150 to the truck pulls and mud bogs.... but i need to finish that project b4 i can start thinking about any of the fun stuff :nutkick:

thats what a transfer sled looks like.....

the large weight in the center weighs a certain amount, so when you start pulling the weight is all at the back by the cab of the sled, as soon as you go the operator starts the system allowing the weight to get pushed forwards along a set of tracks to increase the weight (think of weights on a lever) and making it harder to pull, b/c the sled starts pushing nose first into the ground. the time it takes to push the weight from the back to the front of the sled is determined by the class of truck that is pulling. the idea is to launch hard and fast so that there is less weight to pull b/c of the location of the sliding weight.....

new boston does have a transfer sled come to the larger pulling events, however this isnt one of them

i just remembered, anyone who is looking to hook to the lead sled, you must have driveshaft safety hoops!!! chain is LEGIT!!!

Dave,
Wow, thanks for all the info/explaination. I'm gonna have to think about this, seems like it might very tough on the truck, more than running down the track. Might be a lot of fun, but might be too destructive too... (remember my luck, if it's not bad, it's not there at all :Paully6: )

IT IS HARDER ON YOUR TRUCK THAN RUNNING @ THE TRACK..... thats why my 97 wont ever be pulling a sled...... but seeing as you have a 5 speed, it can be alot less destructive, and its easier to avoid major trans failures b/c you wont be shifting at all b/c its only a 10 ft pull. just dont toast the clutch!!!! if you want, tow a trailer up there..... if you break, ill glady tow ya back to my house to fix it :falldownlaugh: :coorslight:

Arthur...the truck in your avatar is from the movie Duel. It starred Dennis Hopper and was directed by Steven Speilberg. You need to come up with something a little harder than that to fool us.

Here's one for you...other than both being directed by Speilberg, what do the movies Duel and Jaws have in common? And no, it's not that both have 4 letters in the title.

Very good. One of my all time favorite movies. Very nice.

Answer me this: What engine is in the Peterbuilt during the movie? It's not hard, a good internet search will bring you to the answer.

About commanality of the movies, hmm... need a bit more than that to guess about.. Maybe the were both lost caauses as far as film projects go? or, how about both employed real engines? :D

200hp will outpull 500 any day of the week. witnessed that tonight when the good ol boys were hookin bumpers and you can witness it yourself at any real sledpull. All it comes down to is traction and setup. Build that 79 up dave.:smokin:

Don't know the engine Arthur, but the thing that both Jaws and Duel have in common is this...Duel was filmed and released first, at the end of the movie, when the truck goes over the cliff, you hear a loud moaning, very noticable.

In the movie Jaws, Speilberg uses the same sound when, at the end of the movie, the shark is blown up and sinks to the bottom of the ocean.

Oh yea, i had heard about that. They're both great movies imho.

The engine is a small cam Cummins, ntc 350. The original truck was a Peterbuilt with a Cat engine.

thanks jim :coorslight: thats correct, gearing can easily make up for hp if you know how to use it. traction gets that sled moving, you 500 hp+ vehicle will have more traction issues b/c of its power.... my 400 cid motor will be built up some but its not gonna be anything insane, ladder bars will be on the truck, and my tire groover will help me with fine tuning the proper tread design.

dieselnomad
06-03-2007, 06:07 PM
Yep, you're right, it's mostly about gearing. I learned that from using tractors with multiple gear ranges. One tractor I have is 20 HP (diesel) with 3 ranges (12 gears total). The other is 40 something with 2 ranges (also diesel). The 20HP guy will pull almost anything attached, and, if it doesn't pull it, it'll dig holes right up to it's own axle trying... If I had wider wheels (it has thin agri tread now) it'd probably even pull more.

If I could outfit my truck with a creeper gear that'd be so cool for pulling. Well, maybe 4-low is good enough...

Going to the junk yard again tomorrow to see if I can get some extra rims for my truck... hm... :smilielol:

Dave, can't wait to see your puller - are you going to run it in this event?

LOL ....... No its still in the build process right now. this is what it looks like right now: http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w274/NHRedneck/framechopped1.jpg
i did that on saturday  gonna be switching over to straight frame box tubing for the rear 1/2 for a couple reasons :smokin:

condidereing that i still need gears (4.10s) need to finish the rear frame work to swap in the D70 narrow track and throw a D60 under the front of it, ive still got a long way to go..... funds are low right now, so im pretty limited as to what i can do at this point. i just keep trying to plug along at it as much as possible, and just about everything is hand fabbed in one way or another

hey dave, is that your truck near the TOP of the driveway??

just like dunbar said...you can't change horsepower, but you can always change torque.

..is dead head pulling harder on the truck? i assume so...but at what weight (relative to a transfer sled) is it started/run at?

yeah thats my truck in the background of the picture, weve got alot of vehicles, so anywhere turns into a parking spot LOL. im not cool enough to get prime parking...... hell if i come in late @ night, now my parents make me park at the bottom of the driveway b/c i wake them up if they have windows open in the house :falldownlaugh:

the dead sled pulling is less abusive if you know how to drive your truck, but transfer sled pulling is just outright torture LOL.... ive only been to the dead sled pulls 1 time, and ive seen a driveshaft go and i think someone popped a hub.... i cant recall how heavy they load the sled, but it sure as hell does get heavy.
