View Full Version : Intake ideas??

So I am looking at a few ideas for an intake. I have read tons of info on different ideas, and of course nobody can seem to agree as to what is the best or worst. I know that the stock intake will flow enough air for up to about 400HP as well as it seals out the hot engine air better than other systems. So I though about doing a "home depot mod" and running a 4" piece of dryer hose or PVC pipe down through the bottom to get cold air down by the fender. Again, this has its HP limitations and no sound increase.
The other option is to run a BHAF or "Willy whistler" type intake. The plus side is awesome sound and flow capabilities. The downside is that it is exposed to engine heat, which I am reading is a bad thing for EGT's, but then some say it is nothing to worry about. Also, it is loud, which I like for DD, but for towing I'm not sure.
So which would you go? Does having an exposed or partially exposed (I would maybe fab some type of heat shield) really have that much of an effect on the intake and EGT's (especially when towing) or are people making a bigger deal than they need to out of it? Is the HD mod really the best option? Lemme know what you all think?

i run an ICEBOX on mine and i think it is better than a lot of intakes out there, not sure how you could run it and not get any underhood heat.

That really the question that I have, is the underhood heat really going to have that noticeable an effect on things such as EGT's. I figure once you get going the wind going into the engine compartment would probably even things out as far as ambient temps and underhood temps.

I have read a lot on this and tests typically show a +/- 15* difference from ambient temps when @ highway speeds.
BUT when sitting in traffic, pulling a slow hill or waiting for a cool down after a pull, the cooler the air coming in, the faster the EGTs can drop.
I dont recall the formula, but I know the ambient temp is difference is multiplied during compression (by the turbo(s)) when compared to IATs in the head.
That said, for most street drivers, the effect is minimal. But if you tow heavy and often, it IS significant.

I tow a 7000lb travel trailer once or twice a month. I don't really consider that "heavy" I guess.
Kick me in the head next time you see me but Banks has a pretty well thought out design for the 3rd gens.:exactly:

will do.
can't beat the sound of the willy's whistler... never had a problem with egts, but i have stock injectors too

I am basically going to go with a "Willys Whistler/BHAF" idea. After really looking at it, I noticed that the Ranch hand front bumper adds a huge opening right under the airbox. I ordered the biggest AEM Dryflow intake that I could find (the replacement for the HD intake) and am going to run it down in that area. It is a 12"x17" opening that will provide tons of cold air. I didn't realize how much of an opening there really was. It alleviates my concern about too much engine compartment heat. I'll fab up some sort of heat shield to help it along, but I think this will work out.
Tom, do you have a Willy's Whistler?? How is it towing?? I am guessing this is going to be louder than stock, but not as loud as the WW.
Jim, I won't kick ya bud, a friend down here has a Banks set-up on his 2007 D-Max and the fit and finish is really nice. I don't like the oiled filter but otherwise it is top quality (expensive though)
I put a Bank$ turbo back exhaust on a 6.0 for a guy I work with and it was the best fitting/smoothest install Ive ever done exhaust wise.
I still have my stock box, but no more Fram. All those stories of the stock filters trying to get sucked into the turbo is true :smilielol: I think I have an Airaid drop in now :exactly:
