Just thought you guys might want to see this. Its an MP90 from a mustang the turbo is an 80mm Y2K ballbearing from Turbonetics hung on a ported PDI T4 3pc. The system uses the blower (driven 3.56:1) for low end (5psi available @ idle!) and the big turbo for top-end and flow. When the turbo makes boost, it pushes the turbo's internal bypass valve open and blows through it, lessening the parasitic effect on the top-end. :smokin:

Damn Carl, this is on your truck? Performing better than the tripples?
Definitely gotta have more shock factor when you open the hood and probably a pretty cool sound too.

It was something I wanted to try (like the trips) and it worked out well. It is much easier to fab/install than the trips were for sure.
Apple to oranges in performance though. The turbos (have lag inherent to design being exhaust heat driven) as twins/trips often run/get warm but keep the top-end cool. this (being belt driven AND turbine) keeps the bottom end stone cold and slows/prevents top-end spikes. ZERO lag.
I'm not sure how hard it will be on driveline parts though. :97DodgeCTD:

thats awesome i have been wanting to do twins but was playing with the idea of taking the ac pump off the truck being my ac doesnt work and mounting a vortec in its place as a primary to basically do as you did play with some pulleys and have no lag........
DCreed

there are a few threads with that on compD. I would read them before using a belt driven turbo like the vortech. :stirthepot:
Im surprised with 5lbs at idle there is still smoke on a boosted/'charged launch.

I thought the same thing, then remembered it's p-pumped and thought it might be a big pump or have some serious low end fuel? :dunno::popcorn:

I havent replaced the AFC spring yet. I had a soft spring in for the big single so it fueled easily down low. :exactly:

whats better about this setup?
The Whipple is a screw charger rather than the twisted roots like the MP90 so it is more efficient. nearly as efficient as a turbo! It is also 1.5X the displacement @ 2.3 liters per rev. vs the MP90 with 1.5 LPR. The Whipple flows up to 1450CFM (S475) , the MP90 only 800CFM (hx40).
In short, this one spins slower and makes more boost @ a lower temp.
...and its SHINY!!!:smokin:

That and how reliable it is. How much strain the extra air from the turbo is putting on the intetnals with the pulley and belt restricing how fast it can move maybe:dunno:
DCreed
08-25-2011, 12:27 AM
turbo is downstream. if anything, it is lowering the strain.
The Whipple is rated to make 30psi and turn 16000 RPM continuously. I am making 25psi max and turning 13000 max. Less than 1/2 that most of the time. :HoleShotHolset:

What power levels can be made with this set up?

whatever the turbo will support. The SC just gets it going.
