my valve cover gaskets are leaking pretty good, already have new gray ones from cummins. do I need to clean up the oil that leaked out from the old gaskets, or just put new ones on. and how tight should I crank the nut.

check out the mating surface to see if its still pliable. If its no longer soft replace them. I clean them up good and put them on, no torque spec, but I put them on about 30-40 ft lbs if I had to guess. Make sure it didnt slip off the cover when you put them on inbetween the covers in a spot you cant see which would cause a leak.
Napa can get you felpro ones for like $4 ea with a new oring for the bolt if you dont live near a cummins.
