Well Tim years ago, after living here for over a year, I finally met my next door neighbor. Nice enough guy, but he says to me, "I hope you don't mind the noise the goats and chickens make, cause you know we are zoned for animals here". Hell no, I don't mind. The last house we lived in (Meriden) we could hear the next door neighbor grunting before he flushed!

Colchester is about 5 miles down the road. They have Stop and Shop, CVS, Starbucks, McDonalds, Subway, Wendy's and a nice town green where they have an auto show once a month on a wednesday. My neighbors are mostly cows, horses, chickens and goats. Yep, I live in cowchester.

And I think this is where I'm suppose to put the GFY :falldownlaugh:

Have you checked in w/ the local police? Maybe the same jerk got pulled over for something else last night. I'd also see if you can find any tread marks in the grass/dirt to see if you can find a match.

If it were me, I'd probably be out looking for a truck with grass/dirt all up in it's wheel wells.

-1 yard of loam
-a good 15 pounds of grass seed
-starter fertilizer
-preferably some sort of covering- usually straw - 1 bale (not hay!), or there are special straw mixes made for new lawn coverings
-spring steel rake

-level the holes with loam (mix a little grass seed in before/as you dump the loam).
-spread new grass seed thoroughly on the top of the loam.
-then sew it in with a steel rake...lightly drag the rake and put 1 or 2 fingers down pressure on the rake. you need to sew the seed in within the first 1/4-1/2"; it's ok if a lot of the seed is covered by loam.
--sew the new seed in one direction, then sew it perpendicular to the first way (the new grass will grow in rows if you only rake it into the loam in one direction).
-sprinkle starter fertilizer over the loam and seed
-cover with straw, covering, etc.
-don't mow until it's about 6" high

I had a little visit with the people at the town hall.
The town zoning and planning department has "approved" my request to place some very large rocks, purely to give the property a rustic New England look. :woohoo: They just have to be 15 feet off the road. I was asked if the rocks would be native rock, I told them I would in fact be getting the rocks from as close to home as I could. :exactly:

CamperDave
11-21-2007, 07:06 AM
I love to put a fence along the road, but I got over 400' of frontage! That would be over $1,200 in materials. And in the grand scheme of things, a fence falls well below new windows and a new roof (rebuilt tranny would be nice too). But even if I didn't get the free custom landscaping service the other night, I've always wanted to put a fence out there. Fences make good neighbors.

11-21-2007, 07:10 AM
yea, i only have a few or maybe 5-6 that big... i have a tractor w/ loader good for lifting 900lbs.. a few of these the tractor could barely lift (thought the front axle was going to break or something). So, let me know... they're just laying around my yard ...

Repair one or two of the lawns really nice, make sure to make an obvious effort in the restoration. then... Make a nice moveable iron or steel contraption, like a rod-iron fence bent at 45* angle with spikes. I have a bunch of old rod-iron fencing if you want it... Idea is that you make "truck punji stix" out of the fencing, easy to move into place after dark... won't stop him in his tracks, but down the road most likely...

seems like the driver of the truck is either a wicked ahole or doesn't like a bunch of people in your area. Either way, I'd put a stop to it with a nice lawn ornament..... :nutkick:

Back in the early 70's my ole man was working for a company ( excavation , gravel ect ) and 2 weeks in a row during the weekends someone stole the batteries out of some equipment at the pit. It was gated and locked but they could see where the truck was coming down a bank to get into the pit. There was a small mud puddle at the banks edge. Dad took a b hoe and dug the hole where the mud puddle was located to 8 feet deep. The next monday they found the truck with just the rear sticking out of the hidden water hole.:smilielol: Case closed. Just a couple weeks ago I had my mailbox smashed. People can be such a pain. I never destroyed peoples stuff when I was a kid.:wtf2:

I hear ya Richie...
I've heard suggestions from boards with nails and sharpened re-bar to a sniper nest on the roof. I was going to put large rocks out there, went to a buddie's gravel pit and he remembered he had a whole pile of telephone pole stumps (pilings used for a pier, the top were cut off to make everything level and pretty). Much easier to move than rocks and gave our yard a state park look :smilielol: No-one has driven over them yet...

I told the cops if they got my mailbox again I would be filling it with cement and then all they would need to do is go to the hospital and wait for the kid to show up with broken wrists.:Moose: I already had to make a steal proof street sign. They stole my street sign and when the town guy was putting up new ones I asked to do it myself.:smokin: I welded 2 posts together and made a solid angle iron surround around the sign and welded it to the posts. I also cemented it all to the ground. I should be able to get dressed and get out there before they get the sign again.:exactly:

A friend of mine from highschools father was a shop teacher at another highschool some of his students decided to start mailbox baseball with his, he put 2 new ones up before making one of the classic black mailbox replica out of some nice 3/8 steel and welded that to a 4x4 box steel beam filled with concrete and sat back and watched, you know kids look funny with two broken wrists in school...:woohoo:

The "mailbox" type deterrence might have worked back in the day...
But today, I'd be more worried about law-suits. When I lived in RI, the parents of my landlord lived on a corner lot. The guy had a stockade fence placed a good 6 foot off the roadway but people kept cutting the corner short and driving across the grass (which he maintained like a gold-course) inches from his fence. So, he placed some basketball sized rocks, painted bright white about 2 foot from his fence all along the the property. That seemed to work well until one night someone cut the corner, tearing the front end out of his car (he was arrested for drunk driving). The drunk had a good lawyer and sued the guys insurance company, got his car fixed and additional pain and suffering. The insurance company sent my landlord's father a certified letter telling him he had 30 days to remove the rock or he would be dropped from coverage. The police and town had also heard from the drunks lawyer and told him that he should remove the rocks, otherwise the town would be forced to remove them and charge him for the work. It all has to do with creating a potential hazard and the land being part of the town (25 feet from the center-line or something like that).

This is why my telephone poles are at least 25 feet off the road. If someone was to accidentally run off the road, they are well within my property and they will move a lot easier than a rock (less likely to cause injury).

Its actually called a D.F.O. or Deadly Fixed Object. What it really means is that if you or any one places an object that is not easily broken or removable inside the city or towns right of way and someone hits it (that includes the towns plow truck when it snows) you or that some one is liable by law for the damages associated with that object. Also the right of ways for streets vary at every foot along the road so there is no real way to say that there is a general rule for that. I work as a city Arborist and deal with right of ways and D.F.O.'s on a daily basis the town will have a map of where the right of way ends some times they are even on the internet. There are also Pins or stones that indicate right of way boundaries they usually get buried over time especially if its a rural area but property pins are set at the edge of the right of way as well. Now trees of mature age are exempt From all of this but if road improvement or decline in tree health happen its the towns responsibility to remove the hazard but the land owner has first refusal of the wood, that however is subject to each towns own codes. Right of ways and D.F.O.s are a real confusing and gray area of the law simply because of the legal language they are written in. I hope this cleared up any questions any one might have had.

I'm glad I went with nice round rollable log-type NDMO (non-deadly, movable object  ) They may cause some damage, but I think the people will live to take the beating they have coming to em :exactly:

My grandfather had a good story about a guy he knew kept losing his mailbox to the Town plow. So he goes to the Post Office and gets the rules and regulations of putting up a mailbox. He put in a piece of railroad rail in concrete the regulation depth, distance off the road, etc, with the box on top. 1st snow of the year, here comes the plow.
I guess the Town was a little upset, but he thought it was funny having a Walters SnoFiter for a lawn ornament. The wing caught the post and whipped the truck right around into the lawn. The truck was pretty wadded, and he didn't have to pay for it.

The town snow plow and my neighbor used to take out my mailbox on a regular basis. A 300 lbs cast steel switch stand fixed that problem. The town driver can see the stand with no problems. The neighbor has a nice dent in the tail gait of his new Chebby.:smilielol:He didn't see it:eek:.
