my trucks been in the shop for a LONG time now . he thought it was my injector pump. hes changed that and its still not running. he said its saying something about its throwing codes about electric problem to the pump . he thinks it might b the lift pump.. does this sound right. my luck it might b the comp is ****ed up

My advise to you, is to get your truck out of that shop before he starts replacing everything. It's obvious that he does not know a thing about ctd's. The comp should be turned off or disconnected for any diagnostics. If you had a new injection pump put in, it's a no brainer to replace the cheap $100.00 lift pump. Bring it to a qualified diesel shop. If you need a reference let me know.

ahem man, get it out and to somewhere that'll fix the problem. 2-yrs ago I had my truck towed from one bad shop (LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng story) to massDiesel and had everything taken care of..
bottom line is that a lot of shop/garages/dealers, are going to be learning on your vehicle so it's wise to get it going and start knowing what you have... :) Just my opinion and experience..

Dude, there's lots and lots (did I say lots?) of knowledge lurking around the shop at Derby. I don't know who the knucklehead is that's raking you over the coals right now, but if those guys are willing to help (and they're all great guys) you need to bring your truck to them. No chit.

I can't believe the guy working on it started calling around to see if someone else could work on /fix it... Spanky, time to make a call to a wrecker and get your truck out of there. Who knows what else might be screwed up by the time you get it back... like I said before, I learned this the hard way... These trucks (dodge cummins) are not common and the casual mechanic can do some real wrong with these trucks..... Just my opinion, I hope it works out for you.

fass fuel system u say??? before or after the problems???? my uncle and his buddies have had issues with those not working! our friend has 500 hp on his stock lift and injection pump. he bored out the holes and instaled larger fittings. He has 500 hp with his ege drag comp turned off! He has a phat shaft and some big ol' injectors. Point is his fass lasted one sled pull, then broke, his stock lift pump has lasted longer and is still stronge!
Make sure ur fass is good and check fuel pressure!!!!!! dont read codes and throw parts!!!!! biggest mistake!!!!!! just my input...
spanky
11-27-2007, 09:47 PM
ill call tomorrow and ask him what they are. heres what ive been told( please dont kill me on my grammar lol).
first though it was running like ass bc my wastegate was stuck closed.
then got a new injector pump in it still ran for a couple sec then staled out. then tried the lift pump still the same thing. he say it was throwing 2 other codes that were staying something in the electrical in the fuel delivery was ....ed up . thinks it might be like a bad connection somewhere. im going to get hit with like 20 hrs of labor probably going to get killed with this bill :-\

yeah, a fuel pressure gauge and a code reader would do wonders. hell, you'd save a ton of dough at the derby shop with 5 guys trying to figure the problem out for free.
note: if your wastegate was stuck closed, you should have been getting an overboost code where the engine would defuel itself (hence less power).
try to get the code #'s and any more info then we can all give you some more adive.

Well, he should of had the problem diagnosed in a day or two if he knew what he was doing. If he in fact charges you 20 hrs. labor for being ignorant, he should eat it. If he didn't bleed the lines of air as Torque pointed out, it would stall for sure. Is there a chance you have bad fuel? Also, there is a screen in the tank that can get clogged. Why did he change the injection pump in the first place?
sooter
11-27-2007, 11:08 PM
side note: it's really hard to bleed the lines from the lift pump to the injection pump (especially if yo uhave a big fuel line kit) without opening up the plug the leftside of the inlet on the vp44 injection pump. just a stupid idea:idea:
spanky, where were the original symptoms? did the truck die or did you take it in for low power?

There's a couple tell tale signs an injection pump has gone bad. You have intermittent dead pedal while driving, truck won't start, along with the dreaded P216 death code.
PRattenbury
11-28-2007, 06:08 AM
The Pig is right. If he fumbled around for 20 hours trying to figure out what's wrong and didn't fix the truck, he should be considering it a waste of 20 hours of HIS TIME, not YOUR MONEY. If he charges you for not fixing it, he's an a-hole that doesn't deserve anyone else's business.

the lift pump should b running at around 18 psi right 15 while wide open. just double checkin this info

On a stock truck with no mods... 18 is very good, but the pump is only rated for 15. :dunno: If everything is perfect, yes 15 is the number. Start putting on mods and the 15 drops to "0" real fast. :exactly:

i do of course, but filling up the big fuel lines up to the vp44 are a pain if you don't open up the bleeder screw to the left of the fuel inlet on the vp44 (i don't know if this mechanic is smart enough to do so...:Paully6: )

P1688 (M) Internal Fuel Injection Pump
Controller Failure
Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low
power, engine derated, or engine stops.
P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM
and Injection Pump Module
Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection
pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.
P0251 (M) Fuel Inj. Pump Mech. Failure Fuel
Valve Feedback Circuit
Problem sensed with fuel circuit internal to fuel injection
pump.
I don't see a 0252 in the list...
The 1689 is always there. (always there for me) The others are probably still there from the original failure and haven't been cleared yet.

Looked at the first link:

Someone there said the vp44 is toast. Could be, dunno, I'm not a mechanic, especially with any newer vehicle :smilielol:
BUT, did the feller working on your truck ever clear these codes and can he get it running?
I agree w/ Mark, you should really get it out of there...
A couple of weeks in the shop... MAYBE.. needing to order parts and what not. Three months, no way.
Spanky, it's really hard, but once I had to go down to a shop where my truck was to rescue it ... from the waiting room i called a wrecker and then said to the service manager, "give me my truck right now". We argued for quite awhile and it became quite a scene but I left with my truck over an hour later and learned a very big lesson.
good luck, man, i hope this ends soon ...
ps. I wouldn't wait to see what he comes up with next, I think all that's been proven is that he cannot fix the truck.

p0252 is fuel injection pump fuel valve stuck
If he installed a new VP it sounds like it is bad also or he didnt clear the previous codes, is the Comp disconnected from the pump wire itself? the reason I ask is because my TST threw some of the same codes, didnt realize it till we installed a new VP and it did the same thing, so as Warpig said make sure the box is not connected to the pump wire, good luck, and go get your truck, nothing on these things take 2 weeks to fix.

Hey Spanky, I've read this entire thread, and it seems you're afraid to stand up to this guy. Do you know him at all? Has he ever worked on anything of yours before this? If the answer to either question is "No", then get it the hell out of that shop and to someone who knows what they're doing. If the answer to the first question is "Yes", then explain to him that you understand that he would like to help, at at this point, you think it's best to take the truck to a "specialist" (someone who works on these every day). After 3 months, I think he'll understand.
Either way, after you get it, make sure you get it to someone who knows what they are doing to make sure everything is right.
