Hi my name is Kazu.
New to the forum and really bored. I got all kinds of black on my rig now. Gloss, semi-gloss, satin, and flat. Now that I got the show, I need some go. Where do I get the GO tech? I want to start with the transmission before I do anything with the motor, which means I have the 47RE. |

I'm from Barrington NH.
I'm pretty handy when it comes to fabricating parts and such. Also pretty descent with the mechanical stuff, but have no clue when it comes to automatic transmissions, I helped rebuild one and it seemed pretty easy and I've rebuilt a couple of manual transmissions, but I want a transmission that will hold up to what I throw at it and I've been throwing a lot at it lately. I plan to do a lot of power upgrades soon. I just don't want to worry about my tranny ever again I just want to be done with it in one shot. I know it will cost me, but it will be worth not worrying about it anymore. I just need direction. |

Kazu, nice to see you made it over hear man. im with evan, you drop the trans, and take it over to NPD and have ben rebuild it. ben has been very good with me as far as the small adjustments i needed to do post rebuild, and i plan on uding ben in the future whenever im in over my head. are you having any trouble with the tranny as it is right now???your gonna be starting from scratch, which kinda sucks from a $$ POV, but for a GOOD rebuild, you should look at doing a suncoast triple disc converter, billet input shaft, suncoast valve body and a complete rebuild kit. with this rebuild your only weak point would be your trans output shaft, but that can be done with the trans in the truck, you just need to pull the transfer case...... the reason i had to rebuild my trans was b/c of 1 years abuse of a lockup switch caused me to strip the splines off of the input shaft where it splines into the hub, if it werent for me breaking my input shaft, the trans was fine with just the triple disc converter and valve body i had in it.

Hey man, I was lurking for a while here and decided to sign up.
My tranny is fine, no problems so far. I know it's just a matter of time though. So I'd rather just make it the ruggedest thing I own, since it would be a bad day if it went while I was towing. Performance would be an added benefit, however I would rather have it never fail ever. As far as starting from scratch, it doesn't bother me, I'm used to it. Scratch is where I usually start. I was talking to my buddy Aaron and he told me about Bill's transmission. Been there a couple times for my GF chevy. He would always chat me up about my truck and give me suggestions on what I could do to it. Never really though much of it at the time. Then Aaron tells me he got his tranny done at Bill's. Aaron is running over 1000 ftlbs in his Ford and swears by Bill. Any of you guys know about his work? Last edited by KAZU; 05-04-2008 at 01:14 AM. |

Thanks for the complements guys.
So I guess I should give you all the history of my rig. First I have a disease that is incurable. It's called four wheeling. Yeah, sounds kinda dumb, did to me to, until I tried it. Anyway after a while the wheeling rig eventually becomes not very street legal and the road manners begin to deteriorate since you start to design your rig for offroad and forget about the onroad. So now you need an alternate form of transport to and from the trail, since not only is it now illegal to drive it on the road it is also very likely that you break your rig on the trail. Thus, the tow rig is now a necessity. So I was looking for a while for a truck and I found a sweet deal on the Want Adds. 1996 Dodge 3500 Diesel 120,000 miles for dirt. Took a drive down to MA to take a look at it and it was in great shape. The previous owner had the front end rebuilt and the tranny rebuilt in the past year. I couldn't understand why he was selling it for so cheap. Then I took it for a test drive. When you shifted from drive to reverse or from park to drive the motor would die. Luckily I noticed the idle was set at 400RPM. So I tested the shifting while giving it a little gas and it shifted fine without killing the motor. Got back from the test drive and told him about the problem and low balled him even more. I brought it home and cranked up the idle and haven't had a problem since. I pretty much stole it. Here's how it was. I got hit by a girl in a Volvo this winter. Her car was totaled. My truck ended up with a cracked fender. The insurance payout was pretty huge and payed for a brand new bed I found on Craigs List and most of the paint job. New grill and lights. The lights were half the price of the OEM ones and twice as bright. The stuff I tow. And how it sits now. |

Bills transmition does great work and he is a super guy. Had him do 2 tranms for me and he re worked my transfer case when I did my 5spd swap. HOwever if you want to make your trans as rugged as you can id take it to a diesel specialty stop were guys build them to take the abuse of a high powered diesel. Im sure Bill could do a good job but I think the tuning/ setup will be better if you take it to a diesel shop. Either way good lookin truck and nice jeep too. Were do you take it wheeling around here?

well man, seeing as youve got a fresh rebuild on the trans that makes things alot better. if i was in your shoes, i would pull the tranny out and take it to NPD, like evan said its best to have a diesel perf guy rebuild your trans than anyone else (and im not talking bad to anyone specific, im just saying)
then you can have NPD install a billet input shaft, a suncoast valve body and have ben sell you a suncoast triple disc torque converter. the triple disc converter is def the best as far as towing. As long as your clutches are in good shape, its fine to have ben reuse them when installing the new input shaft, and the stock clutches will hold just fine with the extra line pressure from the new valve body. the only reason i say it sucks to start from scratch, is because its expensive. you can check out the prices here: http://www.suncoastdiesel.com/ and dont forget to factor in the cost for the bench work too. as far as the output shaft goes, the only time ive seen an output shaft break is sled pulling and beating on the truck at the track with 400 hp or more..... i seriously wouldnt worry about your output shaft breaking while towing anywhere. in all honesty i wouldnt worry about it right now, as youve got a long way to go before you start breakin stuff like that. and like i said before, you can do with with the trans in the truck if it ever does break. and one last thing.... your gonna need gauges man, especially trans temp, cause when your sitting in traffic these things get warm quickly. most of us just use trans temp, egt 0-1500 and a boost gauge 0-60lbs

im not gonna tell you to buy a UNIT from suncoast... im telling ya to just have ben at NPD build your trans with the suncoast stuff.
valve body is $450 torque converter $1300 Input shaft $750 cooler line hose $58 prob between 600-800 in bench work somewhere between 3100 and 3400 overall cost if you pull your trans and reinstall it. if you were to buy a unit from suncoast you would have to pay $2695 +the 750 for the input shaft (there is no charge for them to install the input shaft for you) but that still doesnt factor in the $1300 for the converter (that doesnt come with the trans) i dont see how ATS can be any cheaper than suncoast, and yes IMO ATS sucks, and i cant tell you all about my buddies experience with them if you would like.

If you wanted to do the work your self another option would be to order a goerend trans. Want to say it was about 3100 without input shaft and converter though but another great trans.

A little update.
NHRedneck showed me how to do all the free mods I could do and we did them. We gutted the AFC and ground down the fuel plate to a #10. It way better off the line now, however, it is at the top end where it really kicks ass. Right when I hit 45mph, it shifts to a higher gear and almost instantly I'm at 65mph. It rips black smoke, but only when I want it to so thats nice. Once I upgrade the tranny I will remod. my plate so I get the same effect from 0-45mph as I do from 45-65mph. I also got a cap for the truck. Not a big fan of the look, but it serves it's function. I'm gutting a pop-up camper and using the sink and burner to have a mini camper in my truck for all the 4wheeling trips I go on. I picked up the cap for $100 on CL it was in perfect condition, but it was white so I stripped it. I had Mark Kustra paint it to match. I have less than $300 into it. What do you guys think? |

Still looking mean and cool.
I think you should black out the chrome towing mirrors too.. Regarding the #10 plate, next you could go with is a 0, but even the 10 is A LOT of fuel. Do you have a 3K GSK yet? I would highly recommend the 3KGSK. It's one of the best things I ever did to my 12-valave |

yup 3k gsk is one of the best mods for drivability you can do imho. When did you and nhredneck meet up? If you need/want to do the gsk kit let me know im only in rochester and can help ya.

3K GSK?
Is that something for governor springs or a replacement spring? Like 3000 RPM Governor Spring Kit? If it is will it increase torque? Or just give you a wider RPM range in all gears? I would like to have a higher/wider RPM range in the lower gears before it shifts. Do the governor springs control the shift points? I thought the TPS does that. This might be better done after the tranny upgrade no? |

it's cool. the 3000 gsk is the best mod you can do, it'll fuel a lot harder in the top end which is especially good if you have a stock torque converter

I just spent a a lot of time and money on my rig week this weekend.
I failed inspection because of a junk upper ball joint on the pass. side and a rod end on the same side and holes in the exhaust. There was a few other things that I wanted to fix so I went to the parts store and went a little crazy. New shocks all around. Replaced every brake line. New calipers. Rotors. Pads. Shoes. Rod ends, both sides. New tires, BFG TA KO that's times 6 BTW. New ball joints, all four. Took me all day Sat. = SUKFEST. Oil change. Fuel filter change. New belts. Welded in 3 big patches on the exhaust and today my new MBRP 4" exhaust showed up. My body hurts and my hands are beat. I think it drove better before, but it STOPS now. I like to go, but stopping is were it's at. MBRP turbo back 4" There is noticeable power increase, turbo spools quicker. Sounds way better, little louder, but deeper so it's less annoying. There was a exhaust hanger bracket that was recommended with the purchase. I thought it was for the dual tip kit, but apparently you need it for the single. I had to fab up a hanger and weld it to the frame, but other than that it took me all of 20min to put it in. Fits perfectly. I'm glad I didn't do the 5" kit since the down pipe would have been hard against the fire wall, unless it's different. |
