Lightbulb Hot Rod Diesel 101

A guy at work, is planning to Hot rod his 6 Speed HO with an Edge Comp. Here is a copy of the Email I sent him with my thoughts Moose

Paul, Here comes a brief story about how to hot rod a CTD in a Dodge Ram, 1998.5 to 2002, with the Edge Comp. 1st thing to do is to join the NETDP at : http://www.newenglandturbodieselpower.com/

From the factory, the Cummins in your truck is De-rated, manly to protect the truck from the Beast that is the Cummins ISB6. (In-line Six Banger [Really it is Interactive Series B, or some such crap]) Remember this quote "I am my own Warrantee Station."

Seeing that you have that JRE sticker in your rear window, read this: http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...ead.php?t=9797
It may not come up for you, if you aren't a TDR Member.

1st things 1st!! Your truck is going you need EGT, Boost, and Fuel Pressure Gages!!!! You must do them 1st!! I use the Westach from Geno's Garage. They have a combo EGT & Boost Gage that is very Cool

http://www.genosgarage.com/

EGT/boost Gage; http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....ber=WM-CG-HO-4

Fuel Pressure: http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....ber=WM-FPKT-30

Fuel Pressure Hook-up Do Hickey; http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?number=LAHF3

The EGT Gage is so that you do not go over 1400F, As Aluminum (Your Pistons) starts to Melt at 1400F! Boost Gage to let you know that you are pushing to much Boost pressure; 35 PSI Max for your HX35, any more and you will Overspeed it. Any thing over 40PSI and you will lift your Cylinder Head (Blow head-gasket!) The Stock Turbo can easily be changed with many different ones. The Head-gasket is fixed by changing the cylinder head bolts with ARP Studs, and a Marine head-gasket. You can O-ring or Fire ring the head gaskets.

Fuel Pressure gage is for your VP44 Injection Pump. It MUST have 6PSI minimum!!!!! Or it will Die!!! http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/index.html
http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/VP44INFO.html

EGT is fairly easy to do, http://gatewaydieselownersassociatio...y=1&how_to=EGT

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...ight=EGT+Probe

Exhaust system: Any thing bigger than 4" will do. If you get a kit for the stock Turbo it should bolt right up.

Clutch; Be ready to buy one If you are running much past "Level 3". Southbend Clutch will do you anything you want. http://www.southbendclutch.com/

The Edge; It plugs in to the "CAN" Bus on the driver's side of the engine, also Tees into the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) Sensor. Now the Fun part, Tapping the "Wire." http://www.edgeproducts.com/product_...manual-211.doc
You can always not tap the wire, in that case the Edge Comp acts as an "Edge E-Z".

I’d say to use a Pump Cover Plate to tap the wire, Such as the Bluechip http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/improv...nnections.html ,

or BD Diesel’s http://www.bd-power.com/ram/product....20Cover&tt=ram

If I was doing it over I think I would start with some sticks or at least have gotten them alot sooner, my DDII's woke it up pretty good, some Mach 3's would probably be sweet. As for the box, I love my comp but I would seriously look at the smarty. Of course and combination of box and injectors and you'll need to update the fuel system.

The 6 speed clutches are enemic to say the least so he should plan on that very soon after the box upgrade.
